The Rev. Mark Surburg grew
up in Bloomington, Indiana. He received his B.A. from Concordia
College (now University), Ann, Arbor, Michigan with a double major in
Biblical languages and religion. Pastor Surburg received a Master
of Divinity degree in 1999 and a Master of Sacred Theology degree in
2000 from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He also attended graduate
classes in Classics at Washington University, St. Louis. He served
as vicar at Bethany Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Virginia.
Prior to receiving a call to the
parish, Pastor Surburg was a doctoral student in New Testament at
Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. He also preached
regularly in north Texas. Pastor Surburg was ordained and installed as
pastor at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lyons, IL on November 9,
2003. While at Zion he served as an adjunct professor in the Theology
Department at Concordia University, River Forest.
Pastor Surburg served Zion until June 2006. He was installed as
pastor at Good Shepherd on July 30, 2006. He was a consultant for Concordia Publishing House’s Lutheran
Study Bible project and has published articles in the Concordia
Journal.
Pastor Surburg’s wife, Amy,
is a registered nurse. They have four children.
